Concrete Floor Leveling

Concrete is an extremely durable building material, but it is still vulnerable to dips, depressions, and uneven surfaces after being laid. While it can be done on your own, it’s usually better to air on the side of caution if you’re unsure of your level of skill. Either you or the contractors will apply a layer of concrete leveling mixture to fill in gaps, cracks, low spots, and other problematic areas. This is important when it comes to home remodels, where you may need to address sagging, cracking, or other signs of damage.

How to Level a Concrete Floor

If you're thinking of DIYing your floor leveling project, be aware that it is an involved process. Many steps need to be followed sequentially and all done exactly right for the job to turn out perfect. It represents hours upon hours of labor that one or two people may not want to take on themselves.

Follow these steps for a rough outline of the leveling process:

  1. Clear the room and clean the floor: You’ll want to clear out all of your furniture, as well as the trim and any appliances. Once this is done, scrape the floor and vacuum thoroughly with a shop vac.
  2. Fill large holes and cracks with concrete filler: This prevents future sagging and cracking.
  3. Mark the low and high points with a piece of chalk: This tells you what spots need to be ground down in the next step
  4. Using a concrete grinder, grind down the high spots: Concrete grinders can be rented from many big box and hardware stores.
  5. Apply primer with a push broom and allow to dry: This should take about a day to dry completely.
  6. Mix the leveling compound: Only ever mix an individual bag, since you only have so long to apply the leveling compound.
  7. Pour the compound on the floor and spread with a long-handled squeegee: Take care to spread the compound evenly
  8. Let it dry again: While many brands of leveling compound dry within 4 hours, you’ll want a full 24 hours before applying any new flooring over it.
